A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself
I worship the ground you walk on.
Its not often that I read a book with a pencil case full of markers and sticky notes to mark important information and stop at every few pages to google something.
I have been studying permaculture and soil biology for a few months now and its like I have discovered a whole new world beneath my feet. This book describes how a farmer went against what he had been taught in his agricultural studies and started a more regenerative kind of farming. He sold his tractor and now implements a ‘no till’ (no ploughing) technique, he rotates his crops and plants cover crops between cash crops. Not only has his yields doubled but because he no longer disturbs the soil he no longer needs to use fertilisers, and pesticides and requires less water. Nature truly is amazing. There is a lot to be said for ecosystems and letting nature be your teacher.
Not only does it produce more nutritional crops, but the soil also holds more carbon. Think about how much land is used for agricultural purposes and how much carbon is being released into the air… and here we are all pointing fingers at cow farmers….
As a vegan Im just as guilty… we all are. What we need is to do away from conventional agriculture, stop pointing fingers and instead of demanding that governments do something, start with yourself and be the change you want to see.
