The three sisters
Companion Planting With Corn (the three sisters)
Companion planting is the planting of plants which have beneficial effects on one another. Taller plants provide shelter from sun and wind. Climbing plants can be trained up over taller plants while others fix nitrogen in the soil. Some plants make good companions because their roots grow to different depths and do not compete with each other for water and nutrients. When planting corn, it is important to plant them in a grid as they are wind pollinated.
The three sisters (corn, beans and squash)
The beans set nitrogen into the soil and have deep roots, which aerates the soil to be used by the corn who in turn provide a natural trellis for the beans and the large squash leaves shaded the soil to cool it and retain moisture. Dried beans, unlike green, store for long periods of time and are packed with protein.
First plant the corn where they get 6 hours of sun per day. Wait until the corn is knee high before you plant the beans. Give the beans a head start, and then plant the squash.
How long does it take for sweet corn to ripen?
After 60 to 100 days corn should be good for harvesting. Corn is ready for harvest when ears turn dark green, silks turn brown, and kernels are soft and plump; squeeze a kernel and the juice will be milky not clear
Other companion plants including, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins, Zucchini, melons, lettuce and sunflowers. Zucchini also does well planted among corn.
